Kingdoms of the Horn (KOTH) was founded in 2019 by Kadhija who has always had an obsession with scent and its olfactory powers.

Our curated collection is carefully designed to take you on a sensory journey, evoking the scents and spirit of East Africa. We thoughtfully select the finest blend of essential oils, natural and synthetic fragrances to create captivating scents that transport you to breathtaking landscapes, vibrant markets, and untamed wildlife.

WHY OUR NAME

Kingdoms of the Horn (KOTH) proudly celebrates the rich history of the ancient kingdoms that spanned the captivating lands of Ethiopia, Eritrea, Somalia, and beyond. These realms, including the Ajuran Sultanate and the Aksum Empire also known as the Abyssinia Empire (which existed from 1270 to 1974) is one of the longest surviving empires in history, is defined by its distinctive character and a legacy that still resonates today.
 
Let us begin our journey with the Ajuran Sultanate, a powerful kingdom that emerged in present-day Somalia. Renowned for its strategic location along the Indian Ocean coastline, the Ajuran Sultanate flourished as a center of commercial trade and maritime prowess.
 
Venturing further north, we encounter the golden age of civilization—the Aksum Empire—which flourished at the same time as the Roman and Byzantine Empires was a force to be reckon with from the 1st to 7th century AD. The Aksumite Empire thrived on prosperous international trade routes that connected to the commercial traffic of the Nile in the north-east, sub-Saharan Africa to the south, and the Red Sea to the west as well as far away places like in India, China and Europe exporting valuable resources such as ivory, gold, and spices, cementing its reputation as an influential economic power. Kingdoms of the Horn is a tribute to the founder's ancestry and to the grandeur of the historical and cultural influence that bridged the past with the present. 

 

OUR PROCESS

Each candle is handpoured in small batches in Toronto. Immeasurable love, skill and patience goes into every candle. We select simple and sustainable ingredients without sacrificing quality. Every candle is made with 100% soy wax, highest quality blend of essential oils, natural and synthetic fragrances oils that are free from toxins like paraben and phthalate. The wicks are 100% lead-free cotton. All sourced fragrance oils are IFRA certified.

Without your continued support and encouragement, I would not be able to do what I love to do everyday which is to create the best non-toxic candles in Toronto! Every candle I make is a labour of love and an emotional journey that transports me back to my favourite memories of my childhood and travels in Djibouti, Addis Abeba and Somalia. Every candle brings me closer to my East African heritage and my beloved grandmother who taught me everything I know about fine fragrances.
